USS Cod Submarine Memorial is looking to blast anything spooky out of the water with its deck gun on Friday and Saturday, October 16 & 17, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., when it will present its annual “Red Light Haunted History Tours.;
Heart-stopping blasts every thirty minutes from the veteran WWII submarine’s powerful five-inch deck gun should light up the lakefront and keep the Lake Erie monster at bay while visitors enjoy family-friendly tours of the submarine under the ruby red lighting used aboard ships after dark. Visitors must climb down vertical ladders to enter the fully-restored 312-foot long submarine, outfitted in what the Navy calls “dark adaptation lighting,” to hear strange-but-true tales of Cod’s amazing history.
“The red light throughout the sub adds a strange twist to the already bizarre stories pulled from USS Cod’s history,” according to Paul Farace, director of USS Cod Submarine Memorial. “Among the true stories we tell include how the only crewman lost during Cod’s entire war service foresaw his demise due to a family curse.”
Tickets are $10 for all ages at the gate and free parking is available. Cod is docked on North Marginal Rd. between East 9th St. and Burke Lakefront Airport in North Coast Harbor. The last tour goes below at 9:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the preservation and maintenance of the Cod, a Navy submarine that served on seven war patrols in WWII, sinking more than twelve enemy ships and rescuing the crew of a Dutch submarine.
The USS Cod Submarine Memorial is a National Historic Landmark located in Cleveland’s North Coast Harbor. The submarine is open for public tours May 1 through September 30 from 10am-5pm daily.
